I grew up in a Pacific Northwest suburb with the woods in my backyard. I have many fond childhood memories of opening the gate of my back fence and stepping out into a wild space ready to be explored. I didn’t realize how important it was to me until I moved to a highly populated city for college—an experience that I’m sure many can relate to. It’s a subtle feeling of emptiness. So what’s an urbanite to do? One could leave the city for a weekend trip into a nearby national park, but that requires planning, time, and resources—more of an occasional treat than a solution. Here lies the central goal of this publication: to inform the reader about the many ways that one can build a deep personal connection with urban nature. This involves re-framing current experiences as well as cultivating new experiences.
