Pakhuis Het Veem (warehouse)
This warehouse was build due to the increase in trade following the construction of the Noordeekanaal (North Sea Canal). It was used to store goods such as tea, coffee, and tobacco near the end of the 19th century. It now serves as a theater, gallery, and office. The aim of this project was to use the lettering on the side of the building to develop a typeface. Het Veem is a bold, display, sans serif that celebrates the unique character of it's inspiration.
The making of
Each letter was hand-drawn on vellum paper which allowed for an exploration of form through quickly produced letter iterations.
Remote Work
This typeface was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, collaborative work took place online. During group collaborative sessions on Figma, we scanned and uploaded sketches to a shared board to develop a cohesive visual system
Alternative Glyphs
Inspired by the unique form of the 'V' and 'M' on the side of the Pakhuis Het Veem warehouse, we created a set of extra bold alternative glyphs.
