National Park lands are on stolen Indigenous land, and yet, park-goers’ experiences are often devoid of dialogue surrounding Native culture, history, and the significance of the surrounding nature. There is a need for an approach that educates visitors on Indigenous culture and history pertaining to National Park lands. Homeland is an app that helps National Park goers who want to honor and learn about Indigenous cultures whose land they are exploring/ visiting by providing immersive AR experiences, detailed information, and statements from Indigenous peoples concerning their culture and land.

To identify issues we wanted to address, my team visited a local park managed by the National Parks Service: Ebey's Landing. We noticed that there was a lack of signage informing visitors about the history of the Coast Salish people who used to live there.

Research

Browse and search for National Park trails nearby. Learn brief Indigenous history relating to the site's location and acknowledge the Native land you are on. Want to learn more? Bookmark the trail and explore it in-person.

Explore

Get notifications when approaching significant sites while on your hikes. Once you are at your destination, learn more by tapping on AR touchpoints and playing corresponding audio statements from Indigenous speakers. Capture photos to document your experience.
